Our current Members of the European Parliament were elected by 43% of the European citizens. The youth participation (18-24) in the 2009 elections dropped to 29% compared to the 33% in the 2004 elections. There was a difference of 21 percentage points between the 18-24 age group and the 55+ age group, 50% of which went to the polls.

The European Youth Forum (www.youthforum.org) is taking up an initiative with other partners to improve the situation of internships in Europe. Internships should provide a learning experience for young people to facilitate successful integration into the labour market; however, there has been an increased prevalence of internships serving as precarious employment for young peoplea cheap way to substitute workforce. In addition, young interns are performing tasks that do not contribute to professional development.

The Life of an Intern: A Rare Glimpse

At the European Youth Forum's General Assembly in Kyiv last week, the Youth Employment Action initiative held the first screening of 'Internview'. The short documentary provides a rare glimpse into the experiences of interns in Europe and by going beyond policy to see how interns and ex-interns feel about internships systems.
